Member of the team that pioneered and demonstrated MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) communication, now integral part of several wireless standards. Specifically, co-invented the PARC (Per-Antenna Rate Control) MIMO scheme, adopted by the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) for UMTS Release 7. Variants of PARC have been adopted by other wireless systems, such as IEEE 802.16 and IEEE 802.20, and for 3GPP’s Long-Term Evolution. Also participated in the first demonstration of out-of-cell MIMO interference cancellation at the 2003 IST European Summit in Aveiro, Portugal.

Participated in the first demonstration of out-of-cell MIMO interference cancellation at the 2003 IST European Summit in Aveiro, Portugal, in June 2003. The demonstrator consisted of two commercial Lucent Technologies base stations, fitted for MIMO transmission using up to 4 antennas, and two mobile station prototypes equipped with 4 receive antennas each. The baseband processing boards on each of these prototypes featured original MIMO ASIC chips. Live video was streamed from each base station down to a respective mobile, with cross-interference between the transmissions. At each mobile station, the MIMO ASIC cancelled the interference from the undesired base while detecting the signal from the serving base.
